Chris Malcomb, veteran teacher and personal essayist will introduce the fundamentals of mindfulness practice and lead an exploration of the benefits it brings to young writers. Through both experiential activities and creative writing exercises, secondary English teachers (grades 6-12) will apply these simple techniques to the writing cycle. In the peaceful gardens of the Hakone Estate, teachers will sit, walk, write, and learn practices to help "free the mind" at all stages of the writing process: idea generation, drafting and revising, listening and offering feedback, and dealing with that pesky inner critic. Bring a good pen, a notebook, and your "Beginner's Mind."

A Japanese lunch will be served.
