The psychological experiences of children of color attending predominantly white institutions are vast and deeply personal. These students are faced with the Herculean tasks of navigating social and academic environments that were not created with them in mind, while moving through already daunting waters of identity formation and childhood development. Racial visibility and social invisibility, cultural alienation, and white privilege are only a few of the imposing realities that many children of color face each day when they head off to school. What is the emotional toll paid by these children in their schools and with their families? What role do we as mental health providers (and teachers and administrators) have in mitigating these stressful factors, and what tools do we need to respond to these inequities? In this workshop, we will explore the internal world of students of color through an examination of the psychological research, clinical vignettes, and the personal narratives of children in independent schools. Through discussion, live exercises, and self-reflection, we will consider how the voices of students of color may be evoked, supported, and valued, while recognizing the collective benefits of doing so. Lunch will be served
Presented by Dr. Rosemary Durousseau, Psy.D. and Dr. Susan Wilkins, PhD. Biographies of the speakers may be found at http://villagecounselinginfo/providers.html.
