Gateway School wins first ever California Middle School Ethics Bowl
Presented by UCSC Department of Philosophy

Santa Cruz, CA (Apr. 29, 2019) -- In the first-of-its kind event, Middle School students from public, private and Catholic schools gathered for the inaugural California Middle School Ethics Bowl on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. The competition was sponsored by the U.C. Santa Cruz Center for Public Philosophy. After three rounds of competition between the participating 20 students, Gateway School’s team was named champions by a score of three wins and zero losses. Other participating schools included Shoreline Middle School and Holy Cross School.

Kyle Robertson, Assistant Director of the Center for Public Philosophy and lecturer in the Philosophy Department at U.C.S.C., was the lead organizer of the event, and had this to say: "I was blown away by the maturity and thoughtfulness on display from all of the students. I wasn't sure what to expect from an event like this. We have run ethics bowl programs with high school students, college students, and adults, but never middle school students. I'm happy to say that these students were very ready to have these conversations about difficult ethical issues. Their excitement at considering new angles on the case was infections, and it was just plain fun to work with them. We are planning to make the middle school ethics bowl a regular part of our programs."

The Ethics Bowl is a style of debate that presents interesting and relevant questions that examine difficult moral dilemmas, and emphasizes respectful communication focused on ideas. Teams of four to five students are given a case to read, and the chance to present their position, offer commentary to the opposing team, and respond to the critiques posed to them. This is followed by a round of question and answer with the panel of judges.

The Ethics Bowl was presented by the Center for Public Philosophy at UC Santa Cruz, which hosts and oversees local ethics bowls for area high schools. Learn more about the Ethics Bowl at https://publicphilosophy.ucsc.edu/ethics-bowl/about/
