Marlborough School seeks a passionate, enthusiastic, creative, organized, and entrepreneurial individual to be a pivotal member of the Advancement Office. The candidate should have demonstrated substantial and successful leadership experience in an independent school and/or college setting in major gift fundraising or relatable and transferable skills and experience.

This person will report to the Director of Advancement. As a top frontline fundraiser, he or she will be expected to be a visible ambassador of Marlborough community becoming fully involved in the life of the school, and most importantly, work closely with Director of Advancement, Head of School, and Board of Trustees and its advancement-related committees to advance the School’s Mission, Core Values, and strategic goals.


The Associate Director of Major Gifts will focus on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects and donors, maintaining regular contact through written solicitations, phone follow-up, outreach events, face to face meetings, special events. Major gift donors are defined as individuals capable of making a $25,000 gift over 5 years. A primary responsibility would be to maximize the total philanthropic relationship of major gift donors and prospects (both Annual Giving and other) to the School. This would involve the development of strategies to generate higher levels of support and implementation of individual multi-year fundraising plans that focuses on renewals and increased gifts. This means establishing long-term relationships with major gift donors, converting prospects into donors, while working collaboratively with colleagues and school leaders.


• Manage a portfolio of 150-200 prospects and donors: complete 16 documented personal, intentional contacts a month, or the equivalent of 4 contacts a week on average. These contacts would include discovery visits, solicitations, and stewardship.
• Metrics would include the number of non-donors converted to donors, the close rate of solicitations and the percentage of those renewing or increasing their giving.
• Maintaining regular contact with donors; Scheduling joint visits with the Director of Advancement, Head of School, Trustees or other appropriate school personnel when appropriate.
• Prepare reports, briefing materials, proposals and related documents for solicitations and stewardship.
• Attend and staff events as required, including evenings and weekends and alumnae receptions outside of Los Angeles.
• Frequent coordination with colleagues in advancement, admissions, communications and other offices.
• Complete correspondence and record of contact with prospects in a prompt and accurate fashion.
• Collaborate with the donor relations manager that all major donors receive appropriate, consistent recognition and an accounting of the impact that his/her gift has on the school.
• Review annual reports of colleges and universities where Marlborough alumnae have matriculated; determine levels of giving and possible emerging donor prospects.


• Participate in discussions reviewing fundraising activities, costs, operations and other data to determine the efficacy of the advancement efforts.
• Vigilant eye to recording contacts, record-keeping and comprehensive and accurate list generation for Annual Report, as well as improvement of advancement/prospect management module.
• Participate in appropriate levels of solicitation and recognition activities.
• Provide support to the Director of Advancement.

• Excellent responsiveness.
• Ability to deal diplomatically and comfortable with a diverse community.
• Exceptional interpersonal, and leadership skills, calmness under pressure with sense of humor.
• Passion for accuracy and detail
• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree desirable.
• Minimum of three to five years of experience in soliciting major gifts.
