Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, coeducational college-preparatory day school for 800 students in grades six through twelve located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, and inclusion. The School draws from over 65 zip codes and 75 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond. Students of color make up more than 43 percent of the student population and over $3 million is awarded in financial aid annually.

Summary Description
The Bishop’s School seeks a full-time English teacher beginning August 2019. While the ideal candidate will have the ability to teach a range of middle school or upper school grade levels based on departmental needs, a background in literacy, literature, writing, student-led discussion and the ability to potentially teach electives is preferred. The department actively considers the scope and sequence of the School’s English curriculum and seeks candidates excited about student-centered learning, interdisciplinary curriculum, and a desire to enhance existing programs and develop additional courses in support of the school’s initiatives. In addition to teaching, faculty responsibilities include serving as an advisor to students and extended day office hours for additional student support.

Desired Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in English or a related field is required; a minimum of 3 years teaching experience is expected, preferably in an independent school. Interest in supporting current co-curricular programs and professional learning communities is also highly desirable.

Irrespective of own religious orientation, ability to support the School’s mission and values as a school founded in the Episcopal tradition
