Middle School Associate Teacher - Computer Science - 2019-20
Description
Middle School Associate Teacher in Computer Science

The Position

The Nueva School seeks a Middle School Associate Teacher in Computer Science to work with grades 5 to 8 in a cross-disciplinary, project-based learning environment. This is a unique opportunity to join our team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers as we continue to develop and refine an innovative and world-class PK-12 computer science and design engineering program. Nueva is committed to implementing a broad, holistic, and modern computer science program that teaches concepts through a variety of projects, libraries, and methodologies. Our Middle School Computer Science program currently uses JavaScript as the language of choice and our core curriculum exposes students to computer science concepts and builds computational thinking as well as programming skills. Our aim is for students to see coding as a creative, expressive medium and understand the diverse ways computer science can be applied in a variety of contexts. The position begins mid-August 2019 and runs through the 2019-2020 school year. This is a full-time position with competitive salary and full benefits.

Associate Teachers work closely with Mentor Teachers through an apprenticeship model. They spend each day in the classroom, working with students, collaborating with teachers, building curriculum, teaching lessons, and reflecting upon their practice. In addition, Associate Teachers attend weekly professional development workshops as part of a year-long curriculum to explore current topics in teaching and learning.

Associate Teachers are members of the Nueva community of educators, one defined by collaboration, inquiry, reflection and lifelong learning. Associate Teachers participate in all aspects of school life, including serving as co-advisors, preparing parent- teacher conferences, chaperoning school trips, and attending faculty meetings and school events. During their second year, Associate Teachers develop a teaching portfolio, and receive support in applying for positions and/or graduate school, building a resume, and preparing for interviews.
Associate Teachers participate in the Innovative Teacher Program (ITP), a two-year program designed to provide classroom teaching experience, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for new and developing teachers.
