About Francis Parker School:
Francis Parker School is a coeducational independent day school in San Diego, California with 1300 students in grades JK-12. Founded in 1912, the school’s mission is “to create and inspire a diverse community of independent thinkers whose academic excellence, global perspective and strength of character prepare them to make a meaningful difference in the world”.
Overlooking Mission Valley, two separate campuses serve students in Lower School – junior kindergarten through 5th grade; Middle School – 6th grade through 8th grade and Upper School – 9th grade through 12th grade. As a college preparatory school Parker offers a comprehensive program that includes twenty-five advanced placement courses as well as a rich palette of electives – all designed to meet the individual needs of our students.
Job Description:
Francis Parker School seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated and passionate teacher to teach in our Science Department.
The Middle School, which includes grades 6-8 and enrolls 300+ students, is a lively and dynamic place. True to the vision of the school’s namesake, Colonel Francis W. Parker, the Middle School emphasizes the importance of learning through doing. A rigorous curriculum guided by a passionate and caring faculty nurtures in students a lifelong love of learning.
The Upper School, which includes grades 9-12 and enrolls 500+ students, is a rigorous and supportive academic environment focused on preparing students for intellectual engagement while in high school and in the years beyond. Building on the work of the Lower and Middle Schools, the Upper School emphasizes academic achievement, global citizenship, and strength of character in order to prepare students to make a meaningful difference in the world.

The preferred candidate will have a depth of content knowledge that equips her or him teach in the Upper School, while also having the broad teaching repertoire required for a range of both learners and grade levels. For 2019-20, open teaching assignment will most likely include, but may not be limited to, courses in the Upper School including Biology, Physiology, and Chemistry. Broad ability to teach a variety of science courses in the 6-12 continuum including Advanced Placement courses is an expectation. The exact teaching assignment is based on both the needs of the department and the particular experience and skill set of the teacher. As such, flexibility is a must!
Essential Teaching Duties and Responsibilities:
• Daily classroom instruction; including planning and teaching a challenging course of study in a developmentally appropriate manner, with experience in differentiating instruction
• Ongoing communication and conferencing with parents
• Advising and mentoring a group of students in our life skills program
• Conferencing with students and colleagues as required
• Weekly collaboration with teaching partners to maintain and develop consistency within course offerings
• Active participation in the curricular improvement of the department
• Willingness to initiate or participate in co-curricular activities such as Science Olympiad, Global Education Trips/Discovery Week, Camp, Math Team, or Coaching Athletics

Teaching Qualifications:
• A degree and preferably a teaching certificate in any of the following: Chemistry, Physics, Biological Sciences
• The ability to passionately and effectively teach both Middle and Upper School science
• The ability to serve as an advisor and mentor to Middle School or Upper School students
• A strong and sincere commitment to professional development both in pedagogy and content area
• High standards and high expectations for students
• Commitment to being a positive and contributing member of the professional community
• A love of children, a passionate commitment to science, and a desire to work with all types of learners
• Extraordinary communication and presentation skills
• A proficiency in the use of technology
• A desire to work in a highly collaborative environment

For Those Candidates Also Interested in the Department Chair Role:
Statement of Department Chair Position:
Department chairs work with the Head and Associate Head of Upper School and Head of Middle School to facilitate the smooth functioning of their academic department in support of student learning. This position has oversight of the Grades 6 - 12 curriculum in their department. A primary duty of this role is to ensure alignment of curriculum with the vision, mission and strategic plan of the School and to support the growth of the faculty in their departments. This position also involves responsibility for the departmental budget as well as personnel management responsibilities.
Essential Department Chair Duties and Responsibilities:

• A strong preference that the department chair teaches class(es) in middle and upper school.
• Department chairs will:
o Foster and facilitate academic development among department members by:
 Designing and reviewing curriculum
 Serving as a source of pedagogical, scholarly, and technological knowledge
 Establishing and monitoring standards for grading and professional practice
 Prioritizing and examining inclusive curricula, teaching practice and environment
 Ensuring appropriate alignment of curriculum between grade levels and divisions
 Regularly observing faculty members
• Observes faculty in classrooms at least once per year for a full class period. This formal visit must include a pre and post observation meeting and documentation of these using the template provided. In addition, the Department Chair observes informally at least two times per trimester (15 minute visit). Provides individual written assessment of faculty performance as part of school-wide professional growth and development process
 Delivering ongoing professional development for their team and assisting with professional learning for all faculty
 Mentoring new faculty department members
 Providing coaching and support for department team members as needed
 Engaging in professional growth and training to be fully equipped to coach
o Address personnel needs by:
 Coaching and mentoring department members
 Alerting Division Heads to personnel performance concerns as needed
 Collaborating with Middle and Upper School Head, and the Associate Head of Upper School for Academics in the recruitment and hiring of new faculty, including interviewing and recommendation of new personnel
 Making teaching assignments within the department, with the endorsement of the division head
 Reviewing student performance and course selection in department course offerings
o Be responsible for operation and management, including
 Budget
 Equipment and supplies
 Book orders
 Planning special programs
 Calling weekly department meetings with agendas distributed ahead of time and minutes following in a timely manner
 Providing teaching resources
 Overseeing placement for all students and criteria for all courses
o Effectively communicate the department’s program
 With parents and students
 With other divisions
 Across disciplines within the division
 With teachers and departments at other institutions of learning
o Department chairs will also
 Develop a culture of excellence and collegiality within the department and between departments.
 Work to maintain continuity and consistency of philosophy, standards, and product throughout the school.
 From time, due to special projects or initiatives, department chairs may be requested to undertake other duties by the Division Head(s)
 Supervise any support staff assigned to the department
 Oversee, facilitate and support extracurricular departmental activities

Department Chair Specific Qualifications:
• A graduate degree in a relevant content area is preferred
• Minimum of five years successful classroom teaching experience and evidence of successful student supervision experience
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• Strong interpersonal and cultural competency skills when working with students parents, faculty, and School leadership
• High degree of knowledge and application of proven best practices in the appropriate and relevant content area(s)
• Culturally responsive teaching experience is preferred
• Proven ability to effectively collaborate with faculty, leadership, and support staff
• Willing and able to commit to a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the job, including willingness to work outside of “regular” school hours including during the summer as needed.
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Robust knowledge of technology platforms and software applicable to classroom instruction and personal productivity
• Desire to engage in and lead professional learning experiences and workshops so as to grow skill sets and foster innovative practice within the School
