Position Overview

Marymount seeks to hire an enthusiastic leader and educator, to serve as our Theatre Director and Drama Teacher. The full-time position entails teaching theatre classes as well as directing our fall play and spring musical. The ideal candidate has a college degree in a relevant field and a minimum of 5 years professional experience teaching and directing high school students.

Job Duties & Requirements

• Teach acting classes to grades 9-12.
• Provide instruction appropriate for individual student differences and learning styles. Create a learning environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students and aligned with the stated mission of the school.
• Select scripts for plays and musicals for approval of department chair and senior administration.
• Arrange for payment of royalties and rental fees to licensing agencies.
• Oversee production budget.
• Conduct information session for students in first week of school year.
• Establish rehearsal, production meeting and production week schedules.
• Disperse and collect commitment forms, rehearsal schedules and conflict questionnaires to students interested in involvement as cast, production assistant or stage crew.
• Audition and cast students for fall play in second week of school year.
• Provide information session for spring musical in mid-November.
• Audition and cast in collaboration with production team (choreographer, music director, vocal director) in early January.
• Direction takes place weekdays and some Saturdays approximately 8-10 weeks including Production Week. There are two dress rehearsals for each production, with the second dress rehearsal open to faculty and staff in the fall and faculty, staff, alumnae and parents of alumnae in the spring. There are four performances in one weekend with two evening performances and two matinees.
• In the course of direction, teach acting principles, techniques, styles, script analysis, character development, etc. Conduct exercises in voice and speech, movement for the actors, improvisation skills and additional warm-up or specialty exercises as needed for performance.
• Invite consultants and specialists from within the faculty or the theater community as necessary for the productions.
• For fall play, collaborate with technical director on set design, prop accumulation, sound, lights, box office technology and seating configuration.
• For musical, collaborate with vocal director, music director, choreographer and technical director.
• Hire and collaborate with costume designer.
• Collaborate with students to create poster and program art.
• Arrange for dispersal of posters.
• Arrange for on-campus and on-line publicity.
• Create performance program.
• Create Production Assistant schedule.
• Guide and oversee student Production Assistants during the rehearsal period in activities that include assistant direction, stage management and production protocol.
• Guide and oversee student Production Assistants during Production Week in activities that include house management, box office and concessions.
• Establish communication with families about schedules, ticket purchase, volunteer opportunities.
• Coordinate parent volunteers.
• Establish communication with Admissions & Development (Communications, Alumnae) Departments to release publicity, offer complimentary tickets, etc.
• Communicate with Facilities and Security regarding Production Week schedules and set-up needs.
• Oversee on-campus and on-line ticket sales.
• Arrange for “lobby board” photographs and photography display.
• Collect production week fees from students to fund snacks and meals.
• Work with administrative assistant to plan, fund and schedule Sage dining service meals during Production Week.
• Arrange for parent volunteers to help with matinee and evening performances.
• Oversee Production Week details including strike, clean-up and post-production payments and deposits of receipts from ticket and concession sales.
• Sponsor the Marymount chapter of the International Thespian Society, induct new members and elevate current members according to status.
• Participate in Conservatory Arts Program activities and meetings as required.
• Maintain Conservatory Arts Program registration and attendance records.
• Create archival collection of photographs for both productions.
• Purchase frames and frame show posters for addition to poster gallery in Cantwell.
• Provide rehearsal and performance schedules for school’s master calendar committee.
• Oversee maintenance of costume, properties and furniture shed.
• Work with Facilities and Administration to share the performance space equitably for the benefit of both the community and the productions.
• Maintain current list of recommendations for performance facilities needed improvements and repairs. Establish dialogue with department chair and Facilities regarding recommendations.
• Attend faculty and department meetings.
• Maintain professional affiliations with appropriate theater organizations and independent school arts consortia.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum of five (5) years related professional experience teaching Acting, directing and producing theatre plays and musicals.
• Bachelor’s degree in related field required; Master’s degree, preferred.
• Experience working with High School students, preferred.
