5th Grade Homeroom Teacher
We are seeking a warm, experienced, and innovative homeroom teacher to join our teaching team. The successful applicant will enjoy working in a collaborative environment and embrace an inquiry-based and developmental approach to teaching children. The ideal candidate will understand how to provide differentiated and extended learning experiences within the context of a progressive school, and use a variety of teaching strategies to engage students in learning. Classroom management skills are a must, so too is a comfort with the messiness of a child-centered process. A love of learning and love of school, and a willingness to support unique and unpredictable learning journeys by students will help you thrive within our organization.

Requirements and Experience

-Teaching Credential and/or Masters Degree in Education or related field preferred
-A minimum of three years classroom teaching experience required
-Experience with progressive pedagogy, student-centered teaching, project-based learning, integrated curriculum planning, and authentic measures of student learning helpful
-A track record of designing interdisciplinary units and lessons would be a bonus
-A commitment to creating an inclusive classroom community that allows for a multitude of perspectives to be heard and respected is a must
-Experience in an independent school setting helpful
-A love of working with students and creating a joyful learning environment required

-Design and deliver inquiry-driven curriculum and instruction in language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science that includes interdisciplinary projects and differentiated instruction
-Collaborate with lead teachers in other lower school grades, as well as specialist teachers, to design integrated curriculum, projects, and service learning opportunities
-Provide a balanced literacy program, which includes use of Units of Study by Lucy Calkins
-Provide a balanced math program that emphasizes critical thinking and real-world problem solving while developing skill proficiency
-Utilize Bridges math program as the foundational math tool
-Lead daily morning meetings using Responsive Classroom and mindfulness-based approaches
-Create a classroom space that is differentiated, engaging, responsive, and beautiful
-Integrate tools and technology as appropriate to support learning and deepen projects
-Identify and respond to individual students’ academic, social, and emotional needs, including learning differences in collaboration with Learning Specialist and Director of Teaching and Learning
-Coordinate field trips to enrich curriculum; organize and attend 5th grade overnight trip
-Help lead service learning and reading buddy programs for 5th grade, and lead class in participating in school-wide jobs program
-Plan, design, and implement authentic assessment of student progress
-Write progress reports and conference with parents
-Supervise students during recess, lunch, and pick-up/drop-off times
-Use documentation to make learning visible to the children and families; contribute to student portfolios
