Upper School Assistant Head

The Position
The Upper School Assistant Head coordinates, inspires, and supports curricular and academic programs and initiatives of the Upper School. The Upper School Assistant Head works closely with the Upper School Division Head and Upper School faculty to create, strengthen, and sustain programs, courses of study, systems, and processes to provide innovative interdisciplinary and interdivisional learning opportunities for students. The Upper School Assistant Head will also work with school leadership to ensure consistency of policy and mission across all aspects of the school. The Upper School Assistant Head has a full-time, twelve-month (July 1 – June 30) administrative position and reports to the Upper School Division Head.  


Academic Advising — Upper School
• Oversees academic advising, working with Advisors and College Counseling to provide appropriate academic guidance and program planning for Upper School students, including managing course selection and registration and graduation requirements
• Leads, with the 5–12 Dean of Student Life, weekly Student Wellness Meetings to discuss students, especially for academic concerns
• Manages and works closely with our Learning Specialist in supporting students with learning differences
• Advises transfer students and families regarding transfer credits and requirements
• Coordinates math and world language diagnostic tests for incoming students; communicates course placements to students and families

Faculty Support and Service
• Leads, with the Upper School Division Head, the Collaborative Assessment and Development Program (CADP) for faculty evaluation and professional growth
• Conducts class/teacher observations on a regular basis; meets with teachers to discuss observations and feedback for growth
• Creates opportunities for reflection and conversation regarding lessons, ideas, and challenges
• Coordinates and facilitates ongoing first- and second-year teacher meetings and workshops
• Works with Upper School Division Head to plan weekly faculty meetings
• Works with Upper School Division Head to determine faculty duties for Upper School faculty

Recruiting and Hiring
• Teams with Upper School Division Head to determine staffing needs and faculty positions
• Leads the recruitment and hiring process for new Upper School faculty
• Works with appropriate administrators from other divisions concerning cross-over and all-school teaching opportunities
• Works with the Director of Human Resources on recruitment and hiring policies and process details
• Teams with Upper School Division Head to onboard new faculty

• Leads the design and preparation of the master Upper School class schedule and assigns students and teachers to classes
• Works closely with Middle School Division Head and Middle School Assistant Head to coordinate all aspects of Middle and Upper School schedules — that is, crossover faculty and students, assembly/community time

Academic Policies and Systems
• Helps to create and refine academic policies and procedures — for example, academic integrity policy
• Leads refinement and improvement of Standards-Based Grading (SBG) implementation to ensure consistency of purpose, values, and communication to all constituencies
• Leads communication and education of all academic policies and programs to students, parents, and faculty
• Coordinates Upper School progress reports/evaluations, templates, grades/transcripts and parent-teacher conferences, working closely with Upper School Division Head
• Manages and works closely with School Registrar for all academic needs — for example, transcripts, standardized testing
• Leads, with the Director of College Counseling, Upper School Division Head, and Head of School, the UC approval process for Upper School courses
• Works with Technology Department to evaluate scheduling software and student information systems to support the academic program
• Coordinates school relationship with Global Online Academy, including student enrollment and evaluation

Teaching and Learning
• Works with faculty, Director of Teaching and Learning, Division Heads, and Head of School to develop clear and deliverable curriculum goals, objectives, and guidelines for each course
• Leads efforts to develop Upper School interdisciplinary programs and studies
• Works with Director of Teaching and Learning and Upper School Division Head to lead and organize Upper School faculty discussions, sharing teaching practices and curricular models
• Works with the administrative team to shape and organize New Teacher Orientation activities 

School-Wide Administration
• Supports and helps to implement PreK–12 initiatives and programs
• Assists in the Admissions process and attends Admission events, including Open Houses and New Student and Parent Information Sessions, as determined by the Director of Admissions and Head of School
• Attends school and division community events as needed to represent the school and our academic program
• Assists in the recruitment of new faculty and staff

Position Qualifications
● Demonstrated ability to serve as a curricular leader with a focus on creating interdisciplinary studies
● Experience leading a teacher evaluation process
● Proactive approaches, careful listening, and superb follow-through are required
● Respond flexibly and creatively with a desire to work in a dynamic environment where new ideas, mistakes, and iteration are embraced
● Openness to feedback and improvement, modeling lifelong learning of teaching practice
● Joy in working with adolescents
● Ability to balance multiple demands from various constituencies with an excellent sense of humor, optimistic outlook, and a non-anxious presence
● Skillful oral and written communication skills
● Successful teaching experience in secondary school and/or university with a minimum of seven years’ teaching experience
● Bachelor's and advanced university degree required

A seminal point of validation came from Nueva's 2011 Presidents' Roundtable, during which university presidents and college deans from some of the country's most respected institutions convened at our Hillsborough campus to discuss the future of education and affirmed the need for a new high school model like ours to better prepare students for this new century.
