Description
Located in the Presidio of San Francisco, The Bay School is an independent, college preparatory high school committed to providing its students with a challenging, innovative curriculum and a collaborative, supportive community. TEACHING FELLOW:
We are seeking a person with one year or less of full-time secondary school teaching experience to become a Bay School Teaching Fellow in Humanities to begin August, 2019.

The goal of the Teaching Fellows program at The Bay School is to provide a person new to the teaching profession with a strong foundation in pedagogy, curriculum development, and independent school culture while receiving support and mentorship in the process—in addition to helping Bay and its teachers remain actively engaged in the conversation about effective teaching and learning.

The Teaching Fellow teaches six courses over the course of the school year (two or three fall semester courses, two or three spring semester courses, and one Immersive course that takes place in the winter or spring terms; the Immersive term teaching load will depend on staffing needs). The Fellow is the instructor of record in each course and is expected to fulfill all of the aspects of class preparation, teaching and grading that a (i.e. non-Fellow) Bay teacher does.*

The courses are chosen by the Dean of Faculty and Teaching Fellows Coordinator who will “scaffold” the courses so that the Fellow works with different discipline team members, different age groups, and a variety of content. The Teaching Fellow is supported by the Teaching Fellows Coordinator through classroom observations, weekly meetings, professional readings, and support in the job-seeking process.

The Fellow also attends in-house professional development (Teaching Seminars) throughout the school year, and during the fall semester, the Fellow is expected to observe a minimum of one 80-minute course per week.

Each semester class meets for eighty minutes three times a week in a rotating schedule. Immersive courses meet for 5-6 hours a day over a three-week time period (January or May/June). In addition to class preparation and classroom teaching, the Teaching Fellow is responsible for:
*curricular development and alignment
*design of skills-based formative and summative assessments
*timely grading
*regular communication with the student, her/his/their parents, and the student’s advisor regarding the student’s progress
*one-on-one student tutorial as needed
*weekly faculty and course team meetings

The Teaching Fellow, like their colleagues, has additional responsibilities to the student and school, including but not limited to serving as a club advisor, chaperone at social events, committee member and admissions interviewer. In addition, the Teaching Fellow may be asked to sub and/or cover additional study halls during the week.

The ideal Teaching Fellow candidate
*finds resonance with The Bay School mission, philosophy and precepts;
*possesses a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a Humanities-related field (History, Literature, Religious Studies, etc.);
*has worked with high school students in some capacity (e.g as teacher, tutor, coach or camp counselor);
*has seriously considered the teaching profession and wants to develop a skill set that will prepare them for teaching at the secondary school level, particularly in an independent school;
*brings a diversity of teaching and life experience;
has demonstrated experience in working collaboratively and sees collaboration as a means to improvement and growth;
is dedicated to anti-bias and equity work and understands both culturally responsive pedagogy and the social justice dimensions of education;
*is committed to ongoing feedback and professional growth;
*demonstrates a passion for subject matter as well as for teaching and learning;
*enjoys working with and inspiring high school learners in all areas of school life.
