Westmark School is a creative and supportive college preparatory school dedicated to educating, empowering, and celebrating students with distinct learning styles, providing the tools necessary to achieve successful and fulfilling futures.

Founded in 1983, today it is a nationally recognized leader in language-based learning differences (LBLD) education. In recent years—under the leadership of its visionary Head of School, Claudia Koochek—Westmark has distinguished itself especially for its deep commitment to bridging research to practice and pursuing the best academic and social-emotional outcomes for every student.

This commitment to offering an evidence-based curriculum and continually innovating upon its methodologies has established Westmark as a model for educating children with LBLD. This is made possible in large part by its investment in professional development and its partnerships with renowned experts at leading institutions. Throughout the year, faculty and staff benefit from ongoing training based on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, which translates directly into student achievement and well-being.

Furthermore, the values of DEI are embedded in the School’s strategic work to create an ever more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment—one that meets the learning needs of every neurodiverse student and fosters a culture in which all members of the community feel welcome, valued, and inspired.

Now is an exciting time to join Westmark School, as it looks ahead to a period of major growth and transformation, both in the near and long term. In the fall of 2023, Westmark will inaugurate a new, state-of-the-art Lower School, which will demonstrate, at a very high level, the impact of connecting classroom pedagogy to advances in neuroscience. The new facility will not only create the optimal environment for our youngest learners as they prepare for Middle School and beyond. It will also serve to position the School as a private school with a public purpose. These future directions include establishing an institute for research and training that will foster more collaboration among educators, both at independent and public schools, to better serve their neurodiverse students.

About the Position
The Director of Middle School embodies Westmark’s mission to educate and empower LBLD students and meet their associated social-emotional needs. A key member of the Administration, the Director provides leadership and encouragement to Westmark’s skilled and dedicated Middle School faculty, as well as the Grades 6–8 families whom they serve. To deliver the highly coordinated, differentiated instruction students need to find success, the position works in close collaboration with the Directors of Lower School and Upper School; the Director of Athletics, PE, and Wellness; the Curriculum Coordinator; and Reading/Math Academic Coaches.

Westmark’s Middle School offers the next leader an exciting opportunity to build upon the School’s strong foundation and take part in fulfilling its pioneering vision. The Director of Middle School is a key member of the Administration, responsible for strategic planning of School initiatives, including: driving enrollment in anticipation of the new Lower School; developing high-level teaching and learning specialty courses for LBLD professionals to grow their expertise; and ensuring that Westmark faculty stay abreast of current best practices for engaging neurodiverse learners.

Everyone at the school is actively involved in learning, understanding, and modeling appropriate actions in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion in every facet of programming. The Director of Middle School is charged with continuing this work on a day-to-day basis.
