Valley Beth Shalom Day School

About Valley Beth Shalom Day School

Nearly 50 years ago, Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis, z’’l, together with Collette Segal and Roz Gidan, set forth a bold and ambitious vision: to create a school, for the San Fernando Valley Jewish community, that would offer both academic excellence and a rich Judaic education–one where students could wrestle with complex ideas, grow as critical thinkers, and be inspired to take action to make the world a better place. From this vision, Valley Beth Shalom Day School was born. Five decades later, VBS Day School stands as a leader in the Jewish day school landscape, recognized for its rigorous academic program and immersive Judaic experience. It is defined by a distinctive educational approach: students are truly known for who they are, Jewish life resonates throughout the hallways, and graduates emerge as motivated learners and ethical leaders, ready to shape the world. Those who have experienced VBS Day School consistently describe it as a place defined by love, joy, and enduring pride. Current parents speak of faculty who truly see their children, both as learners, and as individuals, and of a community that supports them in moments of both celebration and challenge. They describe a genuine sense of belonging within a community that also serves as a lifelong home. Alumni parents reflect on the transformation they witnessed during their children’s years at VBSDS: impressive growth in academic achievement, confidence, Jewish identity, and ethical grounding. They note that their children have gone on to thrive in rigorous high schools and colleges, and to pursue distinguished professional careers in fields such as finance, technology, law, medicine, entertainment, and education. Many VBSDS graduates have taken on meaningful leadership roles in the Jewish community, continuing to shape Jewish life beyond VBSDS. Los Angeles Jewish community leaders consistently recognize the unique multi-generational bonds that sustain our alumni families long after graduation. Schools our students matriculate to also frequently highlight the exceptional preparedness and character of VBSDS alumni. Graduates from VBSDS themselves speak of enduring friendships, inspiring teachers, and the excellent academic and Jewish foundation they carry forward. Many have returned as legacy families, sending their own children to VBSDS in a powerful testament to our school’s lasting impact.
